PHCPPros hosted a panel discussion during InstallerSHOW New York 2026 at the Javits Center for its RUGGED Mind and Body initiative, bringing together industry leaders to discuss mental health, wellness, and workplace culture in the skilled trades.
Moderated by Steve Smith, editor of PHC News magazine, the panel featured Nate Agentis, vice president of plumbing at BDR and founder of Hope for the Trades; Nicole Meyer, PHCPPros digital strategy and business development manager and editor-in-chief of RUGGED Mind and Body magazine; and Lianna Faber, building engineer at the Empire State Building.
The discussion focused on the need to address the mental, physical, and emotional challenges facing today's tradespeople. Panelists discussed the impact of burnout, the industry's "grind it out" culture, and the importance of creating workplaces where employees feel supported.
"Workplace culture must extend beyond revenue and performance metrics," said Agentis. "Organizations need to account for the health and well-being of their people with the same level of discipline applied to business growth."
Meyer explained that RUGGED Mind and Body was born from conversations with contractors and tradespeople who were facing similar challenges but often felt isolated. "Our goal is to create practical, accessible resources that help people navigate those challenges and remain in the industry," she said.
Faber emphasized the importance of physical fitness and routine in supporting both job performance and overall wellness. "The demands of the job require more than physical labor," she said. "Intentional exercise, recovery, and routine are essential to maintaining long-term health."
Panelists shared practical strategies for improving well-being, including prioritizing sleep, exercise, reflection, healthy boundaries, and strong support networks. They also emphasized the need for safe spaces and initiatives like RUGGED Mind and Body and Hope for the Trades that provide resources and support for industry professionals.
The panel concluded that addressing mental health in the trades requires both cultural and organizational change. As the industry evolves, long-term success will depend not only on technical expertise and business growth, but also on the ability to support and sustain a healthy workforce.
