With the advent of the Internet of Things (IOT) and AI technology, HVACR controls tech is advancing swiftly. More than 20 HVACR professionals from around the nation gathered in Chicago recently to discuss this and more at the Unified Group’s 2026 Controls Forum. This multi-day event featured collaborative conversations, educational sessions and valuable networking; all led by Forum MC Mark Heikkila of Peterson Sheet Metal.

The Forum opened with a presentation on emerging controls system tech and a product showcase from Swiss HVACR controls manufacturer Belimo, featuring their latest valves, dampers, actuators, and sensors. Two panel discussions followed. The first focused on network connectivity and strategies for keeping controllers communicating efficiently, covering wiring tips, troubleshooting insights and best practices from industry experts.

The second panel centered on integration challenges, with attendees discussing common obstacles encountered when incorporating new platforms into existing systems and sharing solutions grounded in real-world experience.

“The highlight of the Forum was meeting and conversing with new like-minded people on topics and challenges we share. Something as simple as that was refreshing and encouraging,” Dallas Groen of CW Suter Services said. “There was some great advice towards very challenging subjects.”

Chris Griffis of Temperature, Inc. gave a presentation on an innovative AI program he built himself, walking attendees through its practical applications and potential for the industry.

“I think the AI presentation was the highlight from the day one session. There is obviously a clear path to leverage AI in our sector and use it to boost company efficiency and profitability,” Joshua Donato of Environmental Systems, Inc. said.

Day two featured a large-group discussion on VPN access and cellular routers, with members weighing in on when they choose one option over the other — or use both — and the factors that drive those decisions: cost, security, reliability and customer requirements. Dan Myers, Jeff Winchester and Mark Lusby then presented strategies for growing a controls department, covering topics such as training technicians, successful approaches and lessons learned along the way.

“I like the different approaches brought to the presentations,” Dan Myers said of the Forum. “Each presenter spoke regarding different areas of growth!”

The 2026 Controls Forum demonstrated the collaboration and shared curiosity that defines The Unified Group. Attendees left with new strategies, strengthened peer relationships and practical takeaways to bring back to their companies. The Unified Group looks forward to building on that momentum at future forums.

“The best part (of the Forum) was seeing how everyone has grown their business over the past few years and some of the things they implemented to get there,” Mark Heikkila of Peterson Sheet Metal said. “The Unified Group is building a stronger, more valuable network that provides a crucial resource and the right ingredients for our growth!”

Upcoming Unified Group Forums include Financial, Construction, and Technicians. If you are interested in learning more about attending a forum or becoming a member of The Unified Group, contact Janet Kelleher at [email protected].
