Michigan declares state of emergency over Flint drinking water

January 6, 2016
Extensive work, including chemical mixing and filtration, also is needed at the city's water treatment plant.

Michigan Gov. Rick Synder declared a state of emergency on Jan. 5 as a result of lead contamination in the drinking water for Flint, Mich.

Flint's water became contaminated with lead in 2014 after the city switched its supply source from Lake Huron to the more polluted and corrosive Flint River. The move — a cost-cutting measure taken while the city was under the control of a state-appointed emergency manager — resulted in a spike in lead levels in children.

In related news, the federal government has launched an investigation into the contamination.
