Finally, Some Good News … Mario is a Plumber Again

Last September, for reasons only known inside Nintendo headquarters in Japan, the video game company decided Mario was not a plumber. This despite clear evidence to the contrary that Mario had long since dedicated his career to the PHCP trade. Here's Mario and brother Luigi rapping about how "plumbin's our game" from the opening for the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, which debuted in 1989:

What more proof do we need?

However, gaming fans noticed last fall that Mario's bio said he "seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago." This was presented in the context of noting Mario's revolving carousel of jobs, but it still implied that he had quit the plumbing profession altogether.

Now, equally out of the blue, the company decided to change his biography and confirm that he is once again a plumber.

Here’s a quote from his official bio on the Japanese Nintendo site:

“His occupation is plumber. However, his activity is not confined to that area.”

Well, OK, the man has hobbies. But as one gaming website put it, “only licensed plumbers are allowed to enter giant green pipes and depose reptilian monarchs.”

At press time, no official word on Luigi. But we’ll vouch for his plumbing cred.
