A commitment to developing skilled tradespeople, embracing technology, and strengthening the plumbing profession has defined Midwestern Mechanical Inc.’s leadership in the industry. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota, company has been named the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association (PHCC) 2026 Plumbing Contractor of the Year. Cody Schroeder, Midwestern Mechanical’s education and development manager, accepted the award on behalf of the company recently during PHCC CONNECT 2026 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The award is sponsored by Delta Faucet.

Workforce development is a cornerstone of Midwestern Mechanical’s business. The company operates an in-house apprenticeship program that prepares more than 100 apprentices annually and supports ongoing education for journeymen by providing opportunities through suppliers, training professionals, and PHCC-affiliated programs, including foreman and medical gas training.

Midwestern Mechanical’s commitment to developing the next generation of skilled trades professionals extends beyond its own apprenticeship program. The company was instrumental in establishing PHCC of South Dakota’s Plumbing Apprentice Contest and continues to play a leading role in its success. Company leaders personally design, build, transport, assemble, and manage the competition, creating a professional environment where apprentices can test their skills. In recent years, the company also has expanded those efforts by leading the South Dakota SkillsUSA state plumbing competition.

Demonstrating a commitment to innovation, Midwestern Mechanical has embraced technology to improve productivity and quality. Its Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) team uses Trimble equipment to maximize precise location verification, helping eliminate a majority of rework, while the company’s growing fabrication division helps save time and money on projects. The company also is exploring artificial intelligence to improve office processes, while employees use technology daily for tasks ranging from timekeeping and team meetings to several construction and business applications.

The company’s dedication to the plumbing profession extends beyond its own workforce. Midwestern Mechanical leaders have served in PHCC leadership roles in South Dakota and Iowa, including PHCC Zone Director and service on the PHCC/ACCA Steering Committee and the Plumbing Technical Committee. Employees also serve on advisory boards for local technical colleges and regularly participate in PHCC educational programs and industry events.

“Midwestern Mechanical is an exceptional company whose leadership, professionalism, and dedication to the industry make them highly deserving of this recognition,” said Kristie Brunick, PHCC of South Dakota executive vice president. “Their impact can be seen not only in the success of their business but in the strength of the workforce they help develop, the associations they help lead, and the industry they work tirelessly to advance.”
