Mueller Associates, a mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering firm serving cultural, higher education, historic, and institutional clients, is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a series of initiatives honoring the people, projects, and partnerships that have shaped the firm since its founding in 1966.
The anniversary year culminated on Sept. 24 with “Behind Every Great Performance: Celebrating 60 Years of Invisible Excellence in Engineering,” a celebration held at the Performing Arts and Humanities Building at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
Clients, colleagues, employees, alumni, partners, and friends of the firm gathered to reflect on Mueller’s six decades of work and the relationships that have helped shape its history.
During the evening, Mueller premiered Building the Future, the third and final installment of its 60th anniversary documentary series. Produced as part of a yearlong effort to capture Mueller’s history and culture, the three-part series explores the firm’s evolution, its work with leading cultural and educational institutions, and the people who are helping shape its future.
“Our 60th anniversary is an opportunity to recognize the extraordinary people and relationships that have made Mueller what it is today,” said Todd Garing, President of Mueller Associates. “While we are proud of the projects and milestones that define our history, this celebration is ultimately about the clients, partners, and employees who have trusted and supported Mueller throughout the past six decades.”
The celebration also marked the release of Invisible Excellence: Mueller Associates and the Art of Engineering, a commemorative book documenting the firm’s history from 1966 to the present.
Across 15 chapters, the book brings together archival photographs, project histories, personal stories, and reflections from current and former members of the Mueller community. It chronicles the firm’s growth while highlighting projects and relationships that have helped establish Mueller’s expertise in museums and cultural institutions, higher education, performing arts facilities, libraries, historic buildings, laboratories, and other technically complex environments.
The book was written and compiled by Jason Dittrich, Mueller’s Director of Business Development & Marketing, as part of a two-year effort to document the firm’s history and create a lasting record of its 60th anniversary.
“We wanted this anniversary to be more than a single celebration,” said Dittrich. “The documentary series and book gave us an opportunity to preserve stories that might otherwise have been lost, recognize the people behind our work, and share a fuller picture of what has made Mueller distinctive for 60 years. Just as importantly, they allow us to look ahead to the people who will write the next chapters of our firm’s story.”
Founded in 1966, Mueller Associates has provided engineering services for some of the nation’s most recognized museums, universities, performing arts venues, libraries, and historic institutions. Its portfolio includes work for the Smithsonian Institution, universities throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond, museums and cultural organizations, and numerous public and nonprofit institutions.
Today, Mueller continues to build on that legacy while preparing the next generation of engineers and leaders to carry the firm forward.
