When I was first given the charge to help bring the Radiant Professionals Alliance (https://bit.ly/4xWOauA) back into a more active role, I knew right away that the timing was right. Honestly, it has become a labor of love.
I looked at the industry around us and saw the same thing many of our members have been seeing for years: radiant, hydronics, geothermal, and thermal energy systems are no longer niche conversations hiding in the corner of the mechanical room. They are directly connected to some of the biggest challenges in buildings, energy, infrastructure, comfort, and public policy.
Data centers are changing how we think about heat. High-population cities are looking for better ways to move and reuse energy. Industrial facilities are beginning to understand the value of recovered thermal resources. Communities are asking bigger questions about water, power, resiliency and long-term building performance.
So we jumped in with both feet. What products could RPA produce? What resources should we be responsible for? What guidance does the industry need? What new code provisions could come from our members and experts? How quickly could this group help move an industry that is overdue for a new spotlight? Those questions have shaped the work.
RPA 2.0
One of the simplest and most powerful things about radiant systems is that they work in a way people already understand, even if they do not know the technical language yet.
Radiant heat acts more like the sun than a traditional forced-air system. It warms people and surfaces directly. In cooling applications, radiant systems can also absorb heat from a space and move it back through the system, returning that thermal energy load toward the source instead of simply trying to overpower a room with air movement.
Radiant comfort works with human biology. People do not experience comfort only by reading the air temperature on a wall thermostat. We feel comfort through our skin, through the surfaces around us, through humidity, air movement, temperature balance, and the way our bodies exchange heat with the built environment.
The more we explain that clearly, the more engineers, designers, owners, and facility teams can begin to see radiant and hydronic systems not as specialty equipment, but as human-centered infrastructure.
That becomes especially important when we think about the spaces we design for people we care about most: day care centers, senior living communities, autism and behavioral health centers, schools, health care spaces, and other environments serving vulnerable populations.
These buildings should not be designed only around equipment schedules and minimum compliance. They should be designed around comfort, dignity, healthy skin, proper humidification, better air quality strategies, and systems that support people living their best lives indoors. The skin is a human’s largest organ and when buildings consider its inhabitants first, our bodies will thank us.
Radiant systems give us a different way to have that conversation. They allow us to separate some of the comfort load from the ventilation load. They invite better discussions around humidity control, indoor air quality, surface temperatures, thermal stability, and how spaces actually feel throughout the day. When done correctly, this is not just efficient mechanical design. It is a better building design for people.
Tools for the modern hydronics pro
One of the biggest “aha” moments for me has been the pairing of internal radiant and hydronic systems with ground source technology. That connection changes the way we measure comfort and efficiency. We are no longer looking only at a piece of equipment, a single room or a basic energy calculation. We are looking at buildings as living systems that can move, store, reject, recover and reuse heat in smarter ways.
The more of these systems we get online, the more data we collect on what works, what fails and what can be improved. That is where the growth curve gets exciting. Real projects create real lessons. Real lessons create better designs, better standards, better training, better controls, and better code language.
This is specialized plumbing and mechanical work, and the boundaries are almost endless when you start combining hydronics, geothermal exchange, IoT systems, remote operation, smart monitoring and a few very cool party tricks that make owners, engineers, and contractors stop and say, “Wait, we can do that?”
The soon-to-be-released RPA Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Hydronic Radiant Heating and Cooling, and Snow and Ice Melt Systems 2026 — a.k.a. “The Blue Book” — represents the kind of practical resource this industry has always needed: clear, usable guidance written for the people who design, install, inspect, manufacture, and advocate for these systems.
Good work in the field starts with good information, and the updated manual gives our members and the broader industry a stronger common language. It is not theory for the shelf; this is a tool for the jobsite, the design table, the classroom and final inspection.
The same can be said for the release of BEST 7.0. The Building Efficiency System Tool (https://bit.ly/3SzTa8p) has become one of the most important resources connected to RPA and the Hydronics Industry Alliance because it helps professionals compare system options before the pipe is installed, the equipment is ordered, or the customer is locked into a path that may not be best for the building.
With BEST 7.0, we are moving deeper into the real conversations shaping the market: net energy use, cascading heat pump systems, district energy, geothermal exchange, and thermal energy networks (TENs). BEST is helping the industry model what the future is actually starting to look like.
Engaging an industry
RPA will have a major presence at the 2027 AHR with free education sessions, technical conversations, member engagement and video production that will help extend the value of the show long after everyone gets back home.
We will also host our RPA meeting at AHR, and that meeting is where the real work continues. If you work with hydronics, design radiant systems, install geothermal equipment, manufacture components, inspect mechanical systems, teach the trade, write policy, or simply want to understand where this industry is heading, this is your invitation to join us.
Not everyone can be in every room, and not every good idea should disappear when the session ends. RPA membership gives professionals more than a name on a roster. It creates a place to network with the people who are actively shaping the radiant and hydronics industry. It opens the door to meetings, events, technical discussions, education opportunities, committee work and industry conversations that are hard to find anywhere else.
Members can connect with contractors, engineers, manufacturers, trainers, code professionals and advocates who are working on the same problems and building toward the same future. That advocacy work is becoming more important every year. The RPA Public Policy Committee is now focused on taking action on the bills, acts and policy proposals that directly affect our work.
That means identifying legislation that supports better hydronic, radiant, geothermal, and thermal energy systems, while also recognizing when a proposal may create unnecessary barriers, unintended consequences, or technical confusion in the marketplace. RPA is building a stronger, more active policy effort with a robust team developing a real-time dashboard to track legislation state by state. The goal is simple: help members understand what is happening in their own state, how proposed legislation may affect their work, and where the industry may need to support, oppose, or help improve language before it becomes law.
For contractors, engineers, manufacturers, trainers and advocates, that kind of visibility matters. Policy decisions are being made with or without us. RPA is making sure our members have a way to see them, understand them, and engage.

RPA is a place where field experience can become part of the larger industry conversation through articles, technical content, interviews, event participation, video production, committee work, contests and future philanthropic opportunities.
