Skills Ontario is pleased to support the Government of Ontario’s announcement of a $1.7 billion investment to create 70,000 new postsecondary seats in high-demand sectors, including skilled trades, health care, STEM and education. This landmark investment represents a significant step forward in strengthening Ontario’s workforce and preparing students for rewarding, in-demand careers.

As a long-standing advocate for skilled trades and technology careers, Skills Ontario applauds the province’s continued commitment to ensuring students have access to high-quality training opportunities that align with labour market needs and industry demand. “Ontario’s economic future depends on a strong and adaptable workforce,” said Ian Howcroft, CEO of Skills Ontario. “This investment will open doors for tens of thousands of learners, empowering them to explore meaningful careers in the skilled trades and technologies while helping employers address critical workforce shortages.”

The inclusion of skilled trades as a key priority area reflects the growing recognition of their importance in supporting Ontario’s infrastructure, manufacturing, construction and emerging technology sectors. By expanding training capacity and encouraging collaboration between postsecondary institutions and local employers, the province is helping to ensure that education pathways remain aligned with real-world job opportunities.

Skills Ontario is particularly encouraged by the focus on regional labor market alignment through the proposed Priority Growth Plans. Strengthening connections between education providers and industry will help ensure that students graduate with the skills and experience needed to succeed immediately in the workforce.
