The Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC) has announced the launch of the NextGen Makers Internship Program, a structured, employer-driven initiative designed to help small and mid-sized Illinois manufacturers develop skilled talent through hands-on internships.

Developed with support from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), the program provides manufacturers with a clear framework to create, implement, and manage structured internship experiences inside their own facilities.

Illinois manufacturers continue to face workforce shortages, aging talent pools, and increasing competition for skilled labor. The NextGen Makers Internship Program helps companies take control of their talent pipeline by developing future employees aligned to their specific operational needs.

“This program is about helping manufacturers move from reactive hiring to proactive workforce development, not only addressing immediate workforce gaps, but actively shaping the future of manufacturing in Illinois,” said David Boulay, Ph.D., president of Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center. “The NextGen Makers Internship Program gives Illinois manufacturers a structured, practical way to train and evaluate future employees inside their own operations — strengthening both individual companies and the state’s broader manufacturing ecosystem.

The program is open to Illinois manufacturers with 250 or fewer employees that are primarily engaged in NAICS codes 31–33. Participating companies may be eligible to receive up to $8,000 of paid intern wages, with a maximum of two interns per company, to support internship wages.

Through the program, manufacturers receive the following:

  • A structured internship framework and implementation templates
  • Guidance on planning, onboarding, and mentorship
  • Tools for structured check-ins and performance reviews
  • Support throughout the internship lifecycle

“The NextGen Makers Internship Program is a testament to our shared commitment with IMEC to invest in the next generation of hardworking Illinoisians,” said Kristin Richards, Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. “This program will support the state's effort to develop a pipeline of talent for Illinois' world-class manufacturing workforce, ensuring we remain competitive on a global scale.”

The application process is designed to be simple and self-directed. Manufacturers can apply online, electronically sign the program agreement, and be contacted by IMEC to schedule a kickoff meeting.
