IAPMO, the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) and ARCSA International are seeking technical experts to participate in the following consensus bodies:

• Rainwater Standards Committee: This committee will be responsible for the update of ARCSA/ASPE/IAPMO 63 (Rainwater Catchment Systems)

•  Stormwater Standards Committee: This committee will be responsible for the update of ARCSA/ASPE/IAPMO 78 (Stormwater Harvesting Systems Design for Direct End-Use Applications)

These standards were developed by a joint effort of ARCSA International (formerly the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association) and ASPE.

ARCSA/ASPE/IAPMO 63 addresses the collection and use of rainwater from rooftops and other above-grade impervious building surfaces.

ARCSA/ASPE/IAPMO 78 covers stormwater harvesting systems, including new installations and modifications to existing systems. Its scope supports efforts to reduce watershed pollution, manage flooding, and recharge aquifers through sustainable stormwater reuse technologies. 

These standards are critical in supporting the safe and effective design, installation, and maintenance of rainwater and stormwater harvesting systems. Their updating aids compatibility with new materials, technologies, and evolving codes, while maintaining a strong focus on public health and safety. 

The development and update of these American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited standards will provide jurisdictions and professionals with nationally recognized guidance that supports resilient water reuse systems.

“More than 10 years ago. ASPE saw a need to establish design guidelines for rainwater and stormwater harvesting systems and pioneered the development of these two quality standards," said ASPE Executive Director/CEO Billy Smith, FASPE. "We encourage plumbing engineers to participate in this consensus process to ensure that 63 and 78 continue to be the definitive resources for designers of these systems."  

“These existing standards need to be brought up to date with corresponding language in other code related documents, specifically the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC),” said ARCSA International Executive Director Heather Kinkade. “ARCSA International has worked hard to align its language to other work being done around the water use and reuse code environment and these updates will reflect that work. Additionally, the stormwater reuse industry has grown immensely in the last few years, requiring a more divided guideline between rainwater and stormwater catchment standards.”

What Does a Consensus Body Member Do?

Consensus body members will: 

• Help shape nationally recognized standards

• Align content with applicable codes and emerging technologies

• Help ensure the standards reflect current industry practices and terminology

• Participate in the development process per IAPMO/ASSE PP-1, Policies and Procedures for Consensus Development of American National Standards

Who Should Apply? 

IAPMO is seeking participation from a broad range of stakeholders, including but not limited to:

• Experts in rainwater and stormwater system design, installation, operation, or maintenance

• Professionals in engineering, plumbing, construction, and development

• Representatives from local or state government, regulatory agencies, or Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs)

• Product manufacturers, facilities managers, and building operators

• Members of the public or organizations with interest in water reuse and sustainability
