Residents of Highland Park, Mich., face $11,000 water bills

July 8, 2015

Water bills as high as $11,000, followed by an 119 percent increase spell big trouble for the 11,770 residents of Highland Park, a community essentially surrounded by Detroit.

And if that weren’t not bad enough, there’s also the matter of pending litigation that could result in a $26 million judgment against the city over payments to Detroit’s water system.

The Guardian, an UK-based newspaper, reported in its July 6 issue that a series of potential outcomes is so extreme that officials may dissolve Highland Park and make it part of Detroit.
