IAPMO Seeks Technical Subcommittee Members for Development of National Standard for District ATL Distributed Energy Systems

The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) is seeking volunteers, with technical background in plumbing systems and specific knowledge of district ambient temperature loop (ATL) distributed energy systems and geothermal related low-temperature distribution systems. These systems can be integrated with multiple renewables such as solar thermal and solar photovoltaic. Volunteers representing, but not limited to, jurisdictional authorities, testing lab and educational facility representatives, as well as manufacturing experts, are invited to participate on the IAPMO Z1381 Technical Subcommittee (TSC).

An ATL system is a closed-loop piping system with central pumping that includes various heat sources and heat sinks to hold the loop fluid near the long-term average ambient air temperature. The sources/sinks can be passive (e.g., a ground loop, a body of water, sewer effluent) or active (e.g., a cooling tower) and further can include opportunistic or unique locally available waste or byproduct heat sources (e.g., data center, industrial process). The closed-loop piping system typically controls or engages these sources/sinks to maintain the loop temperature to meet the seasonal requirements as well as specific building needs.

The Z1381 TSC members will be assisting the Hydronics Standards Committee (HSC) with the development of a new American National Standard (ANSI) and Canadian National Standard (CAN). The Z1381 TSC will also be responsible for the content and processing of public review comments and operate in accordance with IAPMO’s accredited procedures for standards development: IAPMO PP-1 (Policies and Procedures for Consensus Development of American National Standards) and IAPMO PP-2 (Policies and Procedures for Development of National Standards of Canada).

Founded in 1926, IAPMO seeks to be a worldwide leader in the plumbing and mechanical industry through the protection of health and safety. IAPMO develops industry standards with a focus on plumbing products, solar heating systems and components, mechanical products (including heating, ventilation, cooling and refrigeration system products) and products used in the recreational vehicle and manufactured housing industries.

For more than 30 years, IAPMO has developed plumbing product standards as American National Standards, initially as the secretariat for the ANSI Z124 Technical Committee in 1984, and since 2005 independently under its own American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited standards development procedures. In 2018, IAPMO received accreditation through the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) for development of National Standards of Canada, thus accepting the responsibility for development of CAN/IAPMO-designated standards.

The deadline to apply is June 29. Applications can be downloaded HERE.

Interested parties wishing to serve on the Z1381 TSC, contact IAPMO Standards at standards@iapmostandards.org with a completed application, as well as a copy of your résumé, by the June 29 deadline, or you may contact Sung Choe at sung.choe@iapmo.org or 909-230-5534 with any questions.
