New pipeline maintenance series offers options for operators to stay compliant

ALACHUA, Fla. — NCCER continues to meet the changing needs of the pipeline industry through the revision of curricula and assessments to the latest operator qualification regulations. The recently released Pipeline Maintenance Series One is a covered task-focused curriculum, as opposed to the prior curriculum which was structured based on levels. Pipeline Maintenance Series One is readily available in color and with updated content as printed modules or e-text from the online NCCER Bookstore. A major benefit of the series is that it can also be customized on the Pearson Custom Library at nccer.org/pearson-custom to include modules from other NCCER titles such as Gas Pipeline Operations to meet the specific needs of operators and contractors. This option allows customers to choose only those modules that align to the covered tasks they need for operator qualification. “I am very pleased to see NCCER respond to our industry’s needs and work with both operators and contractors to develop practical resources that meet the intent of the Department of Transportation’s regulations,” said Tom Magness, general manager of corporate environmental health and safety at Flint Energy Services, Inc. “These various compliance tools enable a useful and meaningful option for meeting regulatory and customer requirements.” Pipeline Maintenance Series One includes new covered tasks for threaded pipe, flange bolting, mud plugging and tubing, as well as covered tasks based on American Petroleum Institute’s Recommended Practice API 1161, Third Edition. The series was revised with expert guidance from leading pipeline operators and contractors from across the country. In addition to the release of the first Pipeline Maintenance Series, NCCER offers various testing components associated with the curriculum: written and performance end-of-module exams, written assessments and Performance Verifications. All forms of testing are directly linked to covered tasks and can be completed on a task-by-task basis. NCCER offers online testing through its Testing Management System, as well as paper-based testing, which benefits pipeline contractors working in areas with limited internet connectivity. NCCER’s covered-task training and assessment qualifications transfer seamlessly to ISNetworld, an online database that is used by operators to evaluate their contractor or supplier’s information to meet internal and governmental requirements. NCCER will continue to report its operator qualification materials – including training, written assessments and Performance Verifications – to ISNetworld for a minimum of one year after release.
