The award was founded in 2006 by Dan Holohan and Robert Bean, and the winner is selected by the inductees and is presented with a replica of a Bell & Gossett System Syzer wheel which was invented by Gil Carlson. The unique circular slide rule calculates the relationship between flow rate, temperature change and heat transfer rate.
Hughes is the ninth recipient of the award.
