ROSEMONT, Ill. — The American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) announced the appointment of William M. Smith, FASPE, as the Society’s new Executive Director/CEO. Smith joined the ASPE staff last year as the Society’s Senior Director of Technical and Regulatory Affairs, serving as the Society’s main liaison with the plumbing industry’s code writing and standards developing organizations. In his new role, Smith will be responsible for the administration, management, and financial operations of the Society, as well as implementing the policies and procedures established by the ASPE Board of Directors. He will provide professional administrative and management support and financial expertise to ASPE’s local Chapters and for all Society activities and programs. In addition, Smith will continue to represent the interests of ASPE and the plumbing engineering community in code and standards activities as well as serve as a technical resource for the ASPE staff and membership. He will continue to build and maintain relationships with other industry organizations to ensure that the public’s health and safety are kept at the forefront of legislation and regulations regarding plumbing system design, installation, inspection, and maintenance.
Smith joined ASPE in 1993 as an Affiliate Member and is currently a Full Member of the Society. He assumed a leadership role in 2002 when he was appointed to the ASPE Board of Directors as Society Affiliate Liaison, and during his tenure the position evolved into Vice President, Affiliate. Smith also served as Chair of ASPE’s Exhibitors Advisory Committee for several years. He was elected to ASPE’s College of Fellows in 2012 and received ASPE’s Distinguished Service Award that same year.
“Mr. Smith has served ASPE for a very long time in many different roles and is well known and respected in the industry. He is very knowledgeable and dedicated, and this has been proven many times through his tireless efforts to ensure the continued success of this Society,” said ASPE President Mitch Clemente, CPD. “I am looking forward to working closely with him and am confident that our members will be just as excited as I am to have Mr. Smith as our new Executive Director/CEO.”
Smith began his plumbing industry career in 1981 as a Plumbing Product Designer for Jay R. Smith Mfg. Co., a leading manufacturer of quality engineered plumbing and drainage products. He subsequently served as a Senior Sales Engineer and then was promoted to Engineering Manager and finally Regional Sales Manager covering both Jay R. Smith and Acorn Engineering product groups.
In addition to his involvement with ASPE, Smith has actively participated in the codes and standards development activities of other industry organizations, including the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association, ASSE International, ASME International, ASTM International, CSA Group, the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials, International Code Council, and Plumbing and Drainage Institute.
“I would first like to express my gratitude to the Society Board of Directors for appointing me as ASPE’s Executive Director/CEO. This is a great opportunity that I humbly accept,” Smith said. “I’m extremely excited to have the chance to continue working closely with the Society’s Board of Directors, our talented staff, our membership, and the industry as a whole—particularly to ensure that the public’s health and safety are kept at the forefront of our respective collaborative efforts.”
