HVAC pros question ‘smart vents’

November 30, 2015
So-called "smart vents" say technology can close off air vents to better distributre air flow, but HVAC experts warn the vents could harm the HVAC system.

At least two companies are developing Wi-Fi-connected air vents that the companies say will intelligently redistribute airflow through a home to lower energy use and improve indoor comfort.

One such company, Keen Home, started making its product available on Black Friday after attracting funding from even one “Shark Tank” investor. But a number of experts in the HVAC industry, including the popular Energy Vanguard blog, are raising alarm bells that closing individual vents can throw an HVAC system out of balance and might even damage the system.
