Fabius Avery Mitchell, Sr. (Bub)

September 3, 1943—October 22, 2022

Bub went to be with the Lord on October 22, 2022. Bub, age 79 and native of Charlotte and resident of Georgetown, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at his son’s hunting farm. He was born on September 3, 1943 to the late James Sanford Mitchell and Dorothy Johnston Mitchell. He is survived by Susan Bradshaw Mitchell, his high school sweetheart and wife of 59 years; son FA Mitchell, Jr. (Mark) and his wife Laura of Charlotte; daughter Kimberly Mitchell Cheek and her husband Kipp of Charlotte; 7
loving grandchildren Amanda, Brandon, Christopher, Madison, Zachary, Megan, and Gunnar; and 3 great grandchildren Emma, Ava, and Grayson. Bub was a star baseball player at West Mecklenburg High School and NC State University where he played for one year. He returned home to marry Susan. Bub also grew up to be an avid hunter and fisherman. He dedicated most of his adult life to passing those skills along to his family, friends, and Pastor. He loved his early life on Lake Wylie by barefoot water skiing, showing off on his single trick ski, and winning many bass fishing tournaments.

At 65 years old and after moving to Georgetown, Bub became a charter captain and took on his new name,“Captain Bub.” He lived out his dream of chartering his own boat and spreading the joy of fishing out onto the waters of Winyah Bay. He had a special heart for children and taught many of them to hunt and fish. Bub was a kind, gentle, and generous man who never met a stranger. He constantly delivered fish and deer meat to those he would meet out in the community that needed a helping hand. He was a man that dedicated his life to helping others. Bub was a legendary turkey hunter and one of the most skilled turkey callers in the southeast. Bub Mitchell was a man of many names, but he was most proud of the name “Paw Paw Bub.” He greatly loved his wife and his kids, but no one seemed to compete when the grandkids and great grandkids came along. His love seemed to flourish when they were around. They all loved him so much.

At 19 years old, Bub ran his family business, Baker-Mitchell Co., which was passed down to him from his father. He owned and managed the company until he retired at age 58, when he passed the business down to his son Mark. Bub was well known in the plumbing supply industry for all of his years. Bub loved the Lord, loved his church, and loved his Potter’s Wheel Sunday school class. He served in his church by singing in the choir, and he sang in the Singing Christmas Tree performance for many years. Bub Mitchell was well loved by his family, his friends, and his community and he will be greatly missed.

Bub’s family will host services in two locations this week. A celebration of life service will be held at First Baptist Church Georgetown (219 Cleland St., Georgetown, SC) on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022 (Visitation 2:00-3:00, Service 3:00-4:00). A graveside service will be held at Moores Chapel United Methodist Church (10601 Moores Chapel Rd, Charlotte, NC) on Friday, Oct. 28, at 3:00. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Martha’s House Ministry (www.marthashouseinc.com) or First Baptist Church of Georgetown.
